"Teijō,Mokuteki,Kasai !!!!"

((Stand Ready, Aim, Fire))

With the shouted command the muskets formed into a line let lose with a fusillade of fire. The balls fired tore into Targets some fifty yards distant, wood was sent flying in splinters. This was only to be expected when given a task any Samurai will dedicate themselves body and soul to the task so when presented with these weapons fresh from the foundries in Kayaku-Taun it would only a matter of time to master them.

Sitting in the shade beneath a silk awning the Lord of Keshi lifted his cup filled with green tea to his lips before taking a sip. He was of course pleased however it would never do to show such an emotional response.

"Mr Von Drich" the words were slow as careful precision was needed to pronounce the Alien sounding words "Well done, your craftsmanship and those of your peers is as ever exceptional"

The man in question was nearing his fiftieth year, his once black hair now streaked with grey. At the compliment his chest momentarily swells with pride. His bow is still .....Uncouth and Salemite in appearance but it will do for now

"Thank you my Lord" he answered in the common tongue "I do hope you are pleased ?"

"Hai" came the response

Sitting there under the awning shielded from the worst of the inclement weather Lord Chōsokabe looks out over the assembled troops. Their blue armour glittered in the in the midafternoon sun. The scorpion mon emblazoned in gold upon their chest.

Sitting next to Lord Chōsokabe, a very tired samurai looks up from a large book on silk and turns to his lord.

"Chōsokabe-dono if I may ask, why are we training our samurai to wield these weapons? While of course our trained warriors will fire them with greater precision, the weapons strength is that it would be fired by anyone." Hisakawa took a long drink of water and yawns deeply, not out of boredom but fatigue.
"I'm sure a man could learn the methods of reloading in an afternoon, why not train a platoon of lesser men in these cumbersome weapons that take precious moments to reload and let our trained warriors continue to practice with the bow, a weapon that can be fired much more rapidly and silently. Can these weapons even be fired on horse back without spooking the animal? There are so many drawbacks to these new weapons".

Ichiro Kage watched as the gunso ordered another drill of black powder weapons. He nodded slightly to give ascent and praise. It would be discourteous not to and the Tanuki wished not to insult the gunso. His nose flared at the stink as he blinked maintaining his on in the face of these gaijin weapons.

Kage hated guns. He hated the way they looked, the way they smelled and the way they took the art out of warfare. Kyujutsu, the way of the bow was a far more precise and faster method of ranged combat. The words of Shugi floated over on the wind and he found himself in agreement. Kage would have loved nothing better than to leave such dishonourable weapons to the ashigaru and keep bushido; the way of the samurai pure. How would a gun duel even work? Where is the honour in operating a mechanism rather than using the weapon? It looked like gunmen simply pointed and released fire. Pointing at an enemy seemed to take technique away. War with Sanctuary was on the wind. Every tool in war was an asset and Kage knew better than to allow pride to cloud strategy.

Kage found a point of tranquillity on a falling leaf that floated by. Nature may abhor the noise and damage but the cycle would pass. He re-centred his inner self. Lord Chōsokabe himself had raised him to command the military of the island and protect his family, he would not jeopardise security. If the Chōsokabe Clan now used gaijin pepper then it must be. Loyalty and Duty came before personal Honour and Courtesy on the battlefield. Tanuki had made his personal feelings clear but in full sincerity he quelled any dissension amongst the samurai ranks. When they dared to question the wisdom of using guns Kage snarled and demanded they apologise for questioning the wisdom of Lord Chōsokabe. He feelings remained his own, and he prayed to Hachiman every night that Lord Chōsokabe did not request Kage use one of these gaijin weapons.

As the sun began to set the field smelled of sulphur. The gunso approached and bowed. Ichiro Kage left the field with the gunso. He kept his feelings hidden but commanded: "Add an extra rotation of Kyujutsu and Kenjutsu for archers and duellists this evening. We must not neglect our other skills. Also, pick seven samurai with the quickest reactions and the strongest chi. I want to work on a way to counter the way of gun, we must form order out of chaos. Over reliance on yin or yang will lead to imbalance."

In a tent a small distance away from the main group, Fukuro set aside his new Ikebana work, feeding a small morsal of meat to the Owl perched on his shoulder. Stroking its feathers lightly he sipped tea, contemplating the crack and whistle of shots being fired. Finally he rose to his feet, setting the bird upon a perch, and walked out into the light, the wind tugging at his neatly groomed feathers. Breathing deeply he smiled a cruel smile, which vanished with a slight twitch, to be replaced with an expression of concern. At last he returned to the dark interior of his tent, and, with a sad glance, welcomed the comforting hoots and songs of his fellow birds.
